Device Engineer


The successful candidate will work on all aspects related of optoelectriconic devices for the primary application of advanced semiconductor infrared sensors and detectors. Primary duties will include device design and processing, assisting in contract R&D proposals, and assisting in transitioning material structures into production.

Candidate will be considered for postdoctoral or regular position depending on experience.


  • The successful candidate will specifically:
  • Work closely with the team members in developing optoelectronics device design
  • Develop and implement nanofabrication of the devices, including photolithography
  • Develop optical and electronic device testing procedures for semiconductor devices
  • Characterize materials and devices including IR infrared detectors and aAvalanche pPhotod Diodes, made of heterostructures, 2D materials, and colloidal quantum dots
  • Write R&D-level proposals and grant applications for semiconductor materials and device technology advancements
  • Write technical reports to funding agencies and customers
  • Make technical presentations at conferences and to customers/collaborators
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair test equipment


  • Device processing, including lithography (E-beam, laser, contact), mask making, resist processing, deposition, etching, and annealing
  • Device characterization using electrical and optical tools
  • Materials and device data analysis and interpretation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong organization skills with an attention to detail, and excellent documentation capability
  • Computer skills including Python, LabView, SQL, AutoCAD, and COMSOL a plus
  • Willingness to learn new technical areas


  • PhD in a relevant discipline (Physics, Engineering or Materials Science)
  • At least three years of semiconductor materials and device experience

Postdoctoral Fellow in Optical Modeling and Simulation


The successful candidate will provide optical modeling and simulation support to projects on sensing and imaging.


The successful candidate will specifically:

  • Use COMSOL to study electromagnetic light propagation in dielectric stacks and metasurfaces. (Multi-physics; Wave optics, RF modules)
  • Use COMSOL to study time-dependent I-V characteristics of bulk and structured photoconductors. (Multi-physics; AC-DC and semiconductor modules)
  • Ability to use optical propagation freeware codes such as MEEP.
  • Work closely with experimental physicists and engineers, and provide theoretical support.
  • Write R&D-level proposals for optical materials and device technology advancements.
  • Present R&D results at conferences and publish papers.


  • Demonstrated experience in using COMSOL for optical, dielectric, electromagnetic, and device simulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in modeling nanostructured materials and metasurfaces.
  • Knowledge of solid state fundamentals and optical, dielectric, electronic and transport properties.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong organization skills with an attention to detail, and excellent documentation capability.
  • Advanced level computer skills in MS Office, Linux, MatLab, Python.
  • Candidate should be enthusiastic and highly self-motivated.

Computational Scientist in Condensed Matter and Device Physics


Sivananthan Laboratories, Inc. is seeking a computational scientist or computational physicist with a strong background in Condensed Matter Physics, Device Physics, Semiconductor and Photonic Materials, and Quantum Materials to conduct advanced research under the guidance and supervision of a Senior Scientist. Collaborating with a team of theoretical and research staff scientists, the successful candidate will plan and conduct research to improve upon existing infrared photodetector materials and photonic device architectures, and to advance the state-of-the-art in novel infrared photonic materials. The successful candidate will first and foremost employ their expertise in computational condensed matter physics to atomistically investigate the relationship between synthesis parameters and material quality in heteroepitaxial systems. Other near-term research will include the development of physics-based models to explain observed phenomena in nanoparticle devices. The position will require written and oral presentations of results to sponsors and the larger scientific community in a professional manner.


  • Calculate the ab initio chemical energies of crystal deformations and defects,
  • Develop empirical force fields and pair potentials for multi-million atom simulations,
  • Perform atomistic simulations of molecular beam epitaxy growth,
  • Relate material defects to their growth parameters,
  • Create or modify computational physics codes, as necessary,
  • Compute the electronic structures of semiconductor materials,
  • Simulate carrier transport in opto-electronic devices,
  • Interpret and relate experimental device data to theoretical models,

  • Direct experience in the modeling and simulation of semiconductor materials and devices
  • Familiarity with programming, scripting, and the use of high-performance computing resources with queue managers
